Myopia, or nearsightedness, often begins during childhood and can continue to progress as the eyes grow. While glasses and standard contact lenses can correct blurry distance vision, they do not necessarily address how quickly myopia progresses. At Santee Vision Care Center Optometry, we provide personalized myopia control in Santee, CA to help slow progression and support your child’s long-term vision and eye health.
Children with myopia may have difficulty seeing the board at school, recognizing objects from a distance, or participating comfortably in sports and other activities. Their prescriptions may also become stronger from year to year.
Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of certain eye conditions later in life, including retinal problems, glaucoma, and cataracts. Myopia control focuses on slowing progression during the years when a child’s eyes are still developing.
A pediatric eye exam is an important first step in identifying and monitoring nearsightedness. During your child’s visit to our Santee office, we evaluate visual clarity, prescription, focusing and eye teaming abilities, and overall eye health. We also consider family history, previous prescription changes, and your child’s daily visual habits.
Signs that may indicate your child should have their vision evaluated include:
Squinting to see distant objects
Sitting close to the television or classroom board
Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions
Complaints of blurry distance vision
Difficulty seeing clearly during school or sports
Early evaluation allows us to determine whether your child may benefit from a myopia management plan.
Every child is different, so myopia control should be tailored to their prescription, age, eye health, and lifestyle. Depending on your child’s needs, options may include MiSight lenses, Ortho-K, atropine, or a combination of approaches when appropriate.
MiSight 1 Day lenses are daily disposable soft contact lenses specifically designed for children with myopia. They provide clear daytime vision while using a specialized optical design shown to slow myopia progression in appropriately selected children.
Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, uses specially fitted rigid contact lenses that are worn overnight. The lenses gently reshape the corneal surface temporarily, allowing many children to see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contacts. Ortho-K is also commonly used as part of a myopia management strategy.
Low-dose atropine eye drops may be recommended to help slow myopia progression in certain children. Atropine for myopia management is prescribed based on the child’s individual needs and requires ongoing monitoring. It may be used alone or in combination with another myopia control treatment when appropriate.
Myopia control is an ongoing process. Regular follow-up visits at our Santee, CA office allow us to track prescription changes, evaluate eye health, assess how well treatment is working, and make adjustments when necessary. We also provide guidance on healthy visual habits, including taking breaks from prolonged near work and spending more time outdoors.
If your child is showing signs of nearsightedness or has already been diagnosed with myopia, schedule an eye exam with Santee Vision Care Center Optometry to discuss personalized myopia management in Santee, CA.
